So spring break is around the corner for many of you, and like so many college students across America, you are probably planning to spend this time having some fun. Whether you’re going to engage in fun time in Florida, the Spring Break capital, or keep it on the quieter side, remember to keep your safety as a top priority.
If you are going away, be aware of your surroundings. Staying at a hotel? Don’t assume that you’re safe if you are with friends. Make note of security and other “safety” zones in the area. Be sure you ALWAYS know how to get back to your temporary home. Keep phone numbers for OFFICIAL taxi companies on hand and never get into any taxi by yourself. Just because you’re partying with other folks your age who “seem nice” doesn’t necessarily mean that they have good intentions. Accepting rides, drinks or anything from someone you’ve just met is NOT a good idea.
Deciding to hang locally (at home or in the vicinity of your school) for Spring Break? This is certainly to your advantage. Clearly you’re more familiar with your surroundings, but if you’re going to be participating in the social scene, the same suggestions provided above apply.
If you are participating in a community service project, I applaud you. This is a great opportunity and will look fabulous on your resume! However, even during these trips, you still want to have fun. Be wise about your choices!
We all have common sense and a conscience. If you are about to enter into a situation that doesn’t seem quite right, follow your gut and leave it alone – even if your friends are going along with whatever is taking place. Other than that, Spring Break is a rite of passage and a favorite pastime for college students across the country. Have fun!
Happy Spring Break 2011!!
